LEARN how to recondition batteries
WHAT IS BATTERY RECONDITIONING?
Battery reconditioning is nothing but waking up a battery from its dead state. This means, after doing reconditioning on battery it starts to work properly like before.
In-car batteries, there is a crystal plate that helps a battery to charge and discharge. After some time, it starts to lose its power, which can be restored through a battery reconditioning process.
ADVANTAGES OF BATTERY RECONDITION
One of the advantages of battery reconditioning is that it is good for the environment as we are recycling our dead batteries instead of buying a new one. Another advantage is that car batteries can cost you solid money so that after learning the technical skills of reconditioning batteries you can take benefit from it and can perform car battery reconditioning on your
dead car battery. Not only that if you are traveling somewhere and your car battery dies, you can also fix your battery, if you have the skills of reconditioning batteries. You can help people if they are stuck on the road due to car battery issues, as well as you can earn from it also.
Through battery recondition our environment is also save from harmful acid, as it is not disposed-off in the ground, rather it is used again. So, as you see that battery reconditioning is very useful for the people as well as the environment.
IS BATTERIES RECONDITION IS DANGEROUS FOR ANY REASON?
Batteries can harm you, if not handled correctly. You must use the right safety equipment while performing batteries reconditioning or else you will be in danger. You must wear glasses and gloves to save yourself from the acid of the battery. You can also face the battery explosion if you badly handle the battery. You must work with steady hands and keep your mind focused while performing battery reconditioning.
Do not recondition the battery if it is damaged or have any leakage problem, directly dispose of the battery. Because saving yourself is more important than saving a few bucks.
Batteries can indeed be reconditioned; however, you cannot do reconditioning for more than 3 times. Reconditioning the battery can indeed increase the life of the dead battery, however, it will completely die after multiple reconditioning. Nothing can last forever, batteries also die out after several years, so avoid applying reconditioning on a battery after 3 or 4 times.
HOW TO RECONDITION BATTERIES SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHILE PERFORMING BATTERY RECONDITIONING
Always prepare yourself from preventing the accidents, while reconditioning the batteries. And take all the safety tips mentioned in the process. Batteries contain a harmful substance called ‘electrolyte’, which is harmful to your body, when in contact with the naked body.
Here, you can follow these tips to prevent yourself from any accident.
1. Gloves: rubber gloves can shield your hands if accidentally there is a leakage of electrolyte acid.
2. Goggles: eyes are the sensitive part of your body, always wear goggles to protect your eyes from any splash of acid or explosion.
3. Apron: always remember to wear an apron, it protects your clothes from electrolyte acid.
4. Mask: wear a surgical or any other mask to protect yourself from inhaling harmful vapors.
5. Ventilated room: always work in a fully ventilated room, so that fumes and heat generated by electrolyte can disperse quickly.
6. Making a neutralizing solution: create a neutralizing solution from baking soda and water, it will neutralize the reaction of acid.
HOW TO RECONDITION BATTERY
Now you understand the battery recondition and how it will benefit you. If you are still reading this article, so let us begin with the procedure of how to recondition a car battery.
Just remember safety comes first, so wear all the safety equipment mentioned above.
HOW TO RECONDITION CAR BATTERY
Is your car battery dead?
Do not worry. By following these steps, you can easily bring your dead car battery to life.
They are easy steps and you can learn these steps in no time. If you have every tool required for the procedure, you will not face any trouble.
You need to collect the following equipment:
1. distilled water
2. Apron for the safety of clothes
3. Goggles for the safety of eyes
4. Rubber gloves for the safety of hands
5. Charger of battery
6. Voltmeter device
7. Steel wool
8. Plastic water buckets
9. Plastic funnel
10. Tool kit
11. Epsom salt (1 pound)
12. Baking soda (1 pound)
13. Toothbrush

- Prepare the battery
First, make sure that you are in the correct room which is a ventilated room, and you have worn the full safety gear. Also, make sure that you have water with you, or a water tap near you, in case of a spill of acid on your skin or clothes you can wash it.
Clean of the terminal of batteries, they might have corrosion on it or any other substance on it. Make sure that remove the battery from the car, it is important to remove the battery from the car.
The corrosion is acidic and can harmful, so for cleaning it from the terminals, create a neutralized solution by mixing baking soda with water. Steer until it becomes a paste-like substance. After that apply the paste on the terminals and start to clean it with steel wool. If you want more good cleaning, then dip the toothbrush in the solution and rub on terminals. By doing this foam will start to appear. Once done, wash the foam with water and baking soda, dry the area with a dry cloth and wait until it gets dry completely.
2. Checking the voltage of the battery
To check the voltage of your car battery, you can use a voltmeter for this. Voltmeters are an electronic device that helps to measure voltage. You can buy this device easily from hardware shops.
The Voltmeter consist of two wires one is in black color which is for the negative terminal, the second one is in red color which is for the positive terminal. Each wire has a metal clip, in the end, site which is tucked in batteries terminal.
Take the black clip and connect with the negative terminal of the battery, similarly, connect the red clip with the positive terminal of the battery. Take two readings which will tell you that if your battery is good enough to work or not. Before starting the car, it must show the reading of 12.6V or greater. Then start your car and check again battery reading, it must be between 13.7V to 14.7V.
If it is showing above reading, then you do not need to recondition your battery. And if not showing the above readings then proceed to further steps.
3. Empty your battery from electrolyte
Now you need to clean your battery from old electrolyte acid. First, make sure that you have a neutralized solution of baking soda to neutralize the effect of electrolyte if there are any spills while emptying the battery.
Remove the caps of the battery by using a screwdriver, place them in a secure area. Now slowly pick up the battery and start pouring out the electrolyte acid in the plastic bucket, present previously. If there are spills of acid, but the significant amount of baking soda on affected are to neutralize the acid. Make sure that, you should use steady hands, do not rush while pouring the electrolyte acid.
4. Cleaning battery plates
Prepare the solution of half a gallon of water and baking soda and mix them. After mixing it pour them in each plate of the battery by using the plastic funnel. Fill the cells to the top, close the head with the caps. After closing the caps, shake the battery with steady hands for 1 or 2 minutes, as the battery gets heavy after filling the solution. This will clean your plates from inside. Now remove the caps and carefully pour out the liquid into the plastic basket.
Completing this step is the assurance that, now you can recondition your battery. Dispose of the waste present in the basket, we suggest you make research for that for environment safety.
5. Recondition procedure
In this process, you will learn how to create your electrolyte and then you must refill the cells with your electrolyte. For creating a new electrolyte, you need Epsom salt and distilled water. Let us see how you will create the solution.
You need Epsom salt having a concentration around 1 molar, mix 120 grams of Epsom salt in 1 liter of boiled distilled water. Pour water in a plastic bucket and keep steering the water while adding Epsom salt. Make sure that water is cleaned, and salt is completely dissolved. Now you have an electrolyte solution that can regenerate the voltage and amperage needed for your car.
Proceed to fill the solution in each cell. Take one plastic funnel(new) and start to pour slowly into each cell completely. Close the heads by putting the same caps, shake the battery for a few minutes, and done.
6. Reconditioned battery charging
Battery charging can be a difficult process as if the battery gets more power than usual, there is a threat that acid can be overflowed. To ensure safety, remove the battery caps. While charging the battery, make sure that your battery charger is placed away from the battery, do not place the charger too close to the battery.
Connect the positive terminal of the battery to positive lead and similarly connect the negative terminal. Charge your battery on slow mode for 24 to 36 hours.
After completing the period of required charging remove the battery from charging. And then measure the voltage of the battery, the required voltage is 12.4V to 12.6V. if it shows the voltage level mentioned above your battery is good to go.
7. Load testing
You have tested battery which can work for you, now close the heads by putting back the caps. It is time for load testing.
Place back the battery in the car and connect it. On your high beams, however, do not turn on start your car. Check for the initial load test and keep the battery run on a low load for a few minutes. After that take one more reading with a voltmeter. If your voltmeter shows the reading of 9.6 volts or above, your battery is not fully reconditioned, you need to repeat the process.
However, you can discharge your battery completely and recharge it again. Do this process for 2 to 4 times. And keep the load test on the initial state, that is only open your high beams of the car. You will get the result after a few processes.
You can also process this test by buying a battery load tester from a hardware shop. If your battery shows the 9.6V for 15s at half the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) your battery is reconditioned correctly. You do not need to repeat the steps of battery reconditioning.
